…if FLOWERS is all you see… you missed at least 13 things!! (click on the FLOWERS) Come to our June After Hours to learn the Art & Science of Keywording. Keywording
is the "art & science" of tagging images for electronic retrieval
- whether that retrieval is your computer file system, a software system or the
internet. How you apply keywords to an image is determined by where your
images are housed, who will be searching for them and how the images are
intended to be used (the audience). The job of a particular keyword is to
link the searcher to the image they want. Job one is understanding who is
looking for your images and for what purpose. If you tag an image in a
way that is meaningful to you, you can easily find it yourself. But what
if someone else needs to find that image? Have you considered how they
may approach the search? Keywording in a nutshell is applying the
necessary terms to an image so that the searcher is able to use personally
relevant terms to find it. It’s a simple explanation for a very complex
activity in a monumentally complex, internet-connected world…

Kirsti O’Sullivan is the founder and
managing director of Keywording.com. After working for several
years in knowledge management for Accenture, Kirsti joined a dynamic RF stock
company. During her tenure in the stock industry she recognized that keywording
was a critical factor in image sales and an area under-served in the marketplace.
This was the beginning of Keywording.com. Drawing on her stock
experience and data management expertise, she developed proprietary software
and a unique business model for keywording as an outsourced service. Realizing
her vision for quality, consistent keywording, Kirsti launched Keywording.com in early 2003 and
has since built a worldwide client base. She currently manages the business out
of Portland, Oregon.

The Lighting and Portraiture Workshop is intended for advanced beginners, hobbyists, and intermediate level professionals who wish to stretch their knowledge of photography with an emphasis on understanding light; how to recognize it and shape in the natural world, and how to create it and manipulate it in the studio and on location.

We begin by discussing the qualities of ambient light, evaluating its hardness or softness and taking into account the specularity, luminance and efficiency of the subject. Next we consider the creative possibilities of the direction of the lighting; front, side, overhead, underside and back lighting. We’ll discuss the camera controls use to maximize the qualities of the lighting at hand and techniques to create the emotional impact the photographer desires.

We’ll then move on to understand flash systems and the myriad number of tools available to the studio and location photographer, umbrellas, softboxes, gels, grids, snoots, beauty dishes and ring lights. Studio flash systems and Speedlights will be covered in detail along with infrared and radio flash triggering systems.

The afternoon three portrait sessions will involve all the aspects we have discussed so far in real world situations; an executive portrait, sports portrait and senior portrait. Here we’ll once agan delve into lighting placement and show Rembrant/45 degree lighting, along with butterfly, butterfly/paramount, loop, split, split/rim and shadowless lighting.

Brian McLernon is a commercial photographer, author and educator based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from New Jersey and educated in Arizona, Philadelphia and New York City, he moved to Portland in 1996, shooting primarily for editorial, commercial, corporate and lifestyle: locations, portraits, products, travel, weddings, seniors, artworks, special events and sports, capturing moments and telling visual stories.

Brian is author of several digital field guides for Wiley Publishing, the most recent one on Lighting. He is also honored to be a guest speaker for numerous artistic associations, communication groups and business organizations and always enjoys speaking to student groups as well.
